Flex, weight, torque, and material all shape how a shaft performs — and, once you factor in coastal wind, they also decide how tall your apex builds and how long the ball hangs before it comes down.
A Relative Label, Not a Fixed Standard
Flex ratings (Ladies, Senior, Regular, Stiff, Extra Stiff) aren't standardized across manufacturers — a "Stiff" shaft from one brand can play noticeably differently from a "Stiff" shaft from another. Flex is better understood as how much a shaft bends and releases during the downswing relative to your speed and tempo.
A shaft too flexible for your swing speed tends to add spin and height, which sounds helpful until wind gets involved and turns that extra hang time into extra drift.
Steel vs. Graphite vs. Multi-Material
Steel
Heavier and more consistent shaft to shaft, generally producing a flatter, more wind-resistant window. The standard choice for iron and wedge shafts among players prioritizing control.
Graphite
Lighter weight raises swing speed for players who benefit from it, but tends to add spin and height — worth weighing carefully on a driver you'll play in wind more often than not.
Multi-Material
Blends a steel tip with a graphite body, aiming for a middle ground between feel, control, and the reduced vibration graphite offers — a growing category in iron shafts.
The Numbers Behind Apex Height
Torque measures how much a shaft twists under load — lower torque generally means a more stable face and a flatter, steadier apex for faster swings, while higher torque can add a touch more height and feel for smoother tempos.
Shaft weight interacts with flex more than most golfers realize: a lighter shaft in the same flex rating tends to play softer and add hang time, while a heavier shaft in the same flex plays firmer and holds a flatter window.
