Golfers often talk about spin rate as if it's the single lever controlling apex height, but spin rate is downstream of a less-discussed number: spin loft. Understanding spin loft explains a lot about why two golfers with similar swing speeds can produce wildly different flight windows.
What Spin Loft Actually Is
Spin loft is the gap between your attack angle and your dynamic loft at impact. If you're swinging down on the ball at 4 degrees and your dynamic loft at contact is 14 degrees, your spin loft is roughly 18 degrees. A larger spin loft generally produces more spin; a smaller one produces less — largely independent of clubhead speed.
Why This Sets a Ceiling on Apex Height
A driver swing with a steep negative attack angle and a lot of dynamic loft can generate spin loft high enough to cap apex height no matter how much raw speed is behind the swing — the extra spin eats into ball speed efficiency and shapes a flatter, lower-launching trajectory than the loft on the head alone would suggest. Flattening the attack angle, even slightly, can lower spin loft and unlock a taller, more efficient apex from the same swing speed.

Rather than continuing to change equipment, the more direct fix is often a setup or ball-position adjustment that shifts attack angle, paired with equipment that matches the new delivery.

A capped, low-ceiling flight window is exactly the shape most vulnerable to a headwind — there's no apex height in reserve to fall back on when the wind pushes back. Golfers who fight a low, spinny ballooning shot in wind are frequently dealing with a spin loft problem rather than a shaft problem, even though a shaft change is usually what gets tried first.
