Loft Steps and Wind Windows

"Add loft into the wind" is common advice on this island — and it's correct, right up until it isn't.

The idea behind adding loft into a headwind is straightforward: a higher-launching, higher-spin shot climbs faster and can punch through turbulent low-level air more efficiently than a flat, low shot that gets knocked down early. It's decent general advice. It's just incomplete without knowing where the tradeoff flips.

Why More Loft Helps, at First

Adding static loft generally raises launch angle and, up to a point, apex height, which helps a shot climb clear of the low-level turbulence near the ground where wind resistance is highest. For a golfer who's under-launching relative to their swing speed, extra loft into a headwind can genuinely add distance rather than cost it.

Where It Starts Working Against You

Past a certain point, additional loft mostly adds spin and hang time rather than useful height. That extra hang time is exactly what gives a crosswind more time to act, and in a pure headwind it simply extends how long the ball fights against moving air without adding proportional carry. We regularly see golfers who've over-corrected into too much loft, producing a tall, floaty shot that actually loses more distance to wind than a properly tuned, moderate window would.

Finding Your Own Turning Point

This turning point is different for every swing, since it depends on your ball speed, spin tendencies, and attack angle. During a fitting, we test a range of loft steps against a simulated headwind and crosswind and log carry distance and dispersion at each one, so the "add loft" advice gets replaced with an actual number specific to your swing rather than a rule of thumb.

Crosswind Changes the Answer Too

A loft that performs well into a straight headwind isn't automatically the right loft for a quartering crosswind, since extra hang time costs you sideways drift in a crosswind even when it isn't costing you distance in a headwind. We test both wind directions separately rather than assuming one setting covers both.
