Hang Time Is Not the Same as Height

Two balls can peak at the exact same apex height and still spend noticeably different amounts of time up there.

Golfers who start paying attention to launch numbers usually latch onto apex height first, since it's the easiest to picture — how high did the ball go? But apex height only tells part of the story. A shot with a tall, narrow arc and a shot with a slightly lower, wider arc can peak at the same number of feet and still behave completely differently once they come back down, because they don't spend the same amount of time getting there and returning.

Why the Shape of the Arc Matters

Hang time is a function of both how high the ball climbs and how quickly it climbs and falls. A shot launched high with heavy spin can peak at the same height as a lower-launched, lower-spin shot, but the spin-heavy shot typically hangs in the air longer, because the extra spin fights gravity on the way up and slows the descent on the way down. That extra time aloft is exactly what a crosswind needs to do its work.

Apex height tells you how tall the arc is. Hang time tells you how long the wind gets to push on it.

Where This Shows Up on the Course

Two golfers can both hit a driver to a 95-foot apex and end up with very different results in a 12 mph crosswind, purely because one shot hangs for 5.4 seconds and the other for 6.3 seconds. The longer hang time gives the wind almost a full second of extra exposure, which is often the difference between a shot that finishes in the fairway and one that drifts into the rough.

What Changes Hang Time Independent of Height

Spin rate is the biggest lever. Higher spin extends hang time at a given apex height; lower spin shortens it. Shaft profile plays a secondary role, since a shaft that releases early tends to add spin without necessarily adding height. Head design factors in too — a lower, more forward center of gravity can produce a similar apex with less spin than a higher, more rearward one.

Why We Track Both Numbers Separately

During a fitting session, we log apex height and hang time as two distinct rows on the same report, specifically so a club that looks fine on height alone doesn't get approved before we've checked whether it's also carrying extra hang time that will cost you in real wind. A flight window that's tall and quick beats one that's tall and slow, even when the two look identical on a still-air carry number.

If a fitting only reports apex height, you're only getting half the picture. Ask for hang time too — it's the number that actually predicts how a shot behaves once real wind gets involved.
