Descent Angle on Lowcountry Greens
A well-struck approach shot can still bound through the back of the green if its descent angle isn't steep enough for how firm the surface is.
Greens built on a sandy Lowcountry base tend to drain quickly and firm up fast, especially during drier stretches. That firmness is great for the health of the turf, but it's less forgiving of a shallow descent angle than the softer, moisture-retentive greens common further inland.
What Descent Angle Actually Measures
Descent angle is the angle the ball is falling at when it reaches the ground, measured from horizontal. A steeper descent angle means the ball is coming down closer to straight overhead; a shallower one means it's still traveling forward with real momentum when it lands. On a firm green, that forward momentum has to go somewhere — usually a longer bounce and a longer roll than you planned for.
What Actually Controls It
Descent angle isn't set by loft alone. Apex height, spin rate, and ball speed all combine to produce it. Two approach shots with the same club and the same carry distance can land at noticeably different angles if one carries more spin or a taller apex than the other. This is why we measure descent angle directly during a fitting rather than assuming it from loft on the spec sheet.
The club that carries the same distance every time isn't necessarily the club that lands the same way every time.
Wind Makes the Firm-Green Problem Worse
A headwind steepens descent angle somewhat, which can help on a firm green, but a following wind flattens it further, which is exactly the wrong direction when the target is already unforgiving. A downwind approach into a firm, fast Lowcountry green is one of the more common ways a "good" shot ends up well over the back.
What We Adjust
When descent angle is running shallow for a given club, we typically look first at spin rate and apex height rather than simply adding loft, since added loft alone can shorten distance without meaningfully steepening the landing angle. A shaft or head change that raises apex height while holding spin steady is often the more direct fix.
The Takeaway
On firm, sandy-based greens, distance control only solves half the equation. A fitting that also checks descent angle by club gives you a much better read on which approach shots will actually hold and which ones are likely to run through the back.
